Modelling Boxie the Robot

Reference from Week 1 Lecture :


My first attempt I wanted to create a lot of the different details and shapes. This became a little more difficult than anticipated and I really didn't like the methods I was using, not to mention the mixed detail density I ended up with.


I went back to the beginning and started modelling again, making sure I start simple and getting the general important features first. I didn't find this too difficult as I have had previous experience with Maya.


I then began changing the materials and colours of the various different parts, I had also parented them all to the body. I encountered some strange occurrences with the parenting later. but currently I found that any material I applied to the body applied to the sub objects of the parent, I had to change the parent first before I could change the other objects.


I had then created a plane and applied a default Maya noise texture, I chose some colours that I liked, looks a little bit like a foreign planet, perhaps Boxie is on an expedition.

Although this is done and adequate, I personally really like rendering my scenes, this is where I start looking into different lighting methods. Started with a directional light and added some mesh eyeballs, but I couldn't seem to get them to glow.


This being my first time using Arnold as opposed to the usual mental ray I initially found it fairly difficult, until I noticed the new Arnold tab, (facepalm). This revealed all of the functions that I had read about in my research. ( https://support.solidangle.com/display/AFMUG/Lights )

I was then able to apply some mesh light to the eyes and included an area light for a blue under-glow.



Further added more lighting, I was so happy about mesh lights that I started adding more. I included a sky dome light and a complimentary back light in red on the character.


Now for a render, using the new Arnold render view :


Huge amounts of artifacting, found this very strange since this wasn't hugely present in using the Mental Ray renderer. I had heard Arnold being praised for a number of aspects, its speed included, I'll give it that, the speed at which it creates these renders is nice for previewing a scene. I started turning the render quality up and it suddenly took a lot longer to render out my scene.

The shot is rendered and I hit the save image button. Case closed, until I had realised that the render was showing up really dark in comparison to the render view.


This was due to Maya auto adjusting the image in the render view I had to go into the save image settings and select it to save the modified image rather than the raw image. This also made me realise that rendering a scene in Maya can then later be colour corrected and have other filters applied to the footage similar to methods used film.
